My aim is to bring the painterly touch of the brush to the quiet stillness of clay

‘I use slip casting and hand building techniques to create my ceramics with white earthenware clay. Each piece is bisque-fired then carefully hand-painted with ceramic glazes before a final firing.

My aim is to bring the painterly touch of the brush to the quiet stillness of clay. Inspired by the loose and succinct quality of Chinese painting, as well as by the wild North Pennine landscape in which I live, I experiment with different effects of layering, mark-making and colour diffusion on and within ceramic forms that have a clean, sculptural beauty.

I hope to communicate a sense of place; not a literal one; but one that conjures up an atmosphere or a feeling. Painting with the glazes becomes intuitive, so that the end result lies somewhere between figurative detail and abstraction’.

Sarah gained her BA Honours degree in Fine Art (with Painting specialism) in 1986 at Manchester Metropolitan University. In 2008 she gained a Masters degree in The History of Art and Design at Birmingham University.

She has lived and worked in the UK as well as in Greece, Spain, Russia and China.

She was first inspired to paint on ceramic during her four years of living in China. Sarah has work in galleries and private collections both in the UK and abroad.
